Random thoughts, usually on Fedora

Before the moon rises

David Nielsen, before you get all excited, you might want to read this.

“It’s true that, under the terms of our agreements with Microsoft, only SUSE Linux Enterprise will be able to bundle Moonlight into the distribution.”

I hope that we aren’t struck with more patent encumbered software issues now.

Don’t try to belittle concerns like this. I never said anything about anybody being evil.I am giving you a exact quote and reference and no we aren’t talking about just the media bundle. Read the article and references in more detail. If this has to get into Fedora, it definitely need a legal review. Period.

Not belittling anything here, but you cite an article with absolutely no references, from a news site that seems to consider Boycott Novell an unbiased source of information on Novells community dealings.

Now the Moonlight site referers to the Mono license page, which mentions only GPLv2, LGPLv2 and MIT. All acceptable licenses. There is one kicker though a bit more digging gives this:

      http://www.microsoft.com/interop/msnovellcollab/moonlight.mspx

Which definitely is of interest, though it seems to be an extension of the existing agreement which deals with the customers of each company not the company itself.

This feels like singling out of Novells work yet again – remember when we caused the entire Mono community lasting damage by citing patent concerns with out referencing patent numbers to worry about. I’d rather not have that happen again, block an eventual review on legal review, please don’t continue to make it feel like working on Mono and related technologies in Fedora is work that will be shot down even before it begins.

I will certainly raise my concerns regardless of the comfort level. One is a direct quote from Novell and another is from Miguel and I have every reason to be concerned. If you want to dismiss them all, let it go through a legal review then.
