Random thoughts, usually on Fedora

RFC: Fedora Xfce Spin

Fedora Xfce Spin is a variant of Fedora with a focus on low resource systems and in particular Xfce users. It is a live cd image that you can optionally install to hard disk or USB images.

I have a kickstart file available at

http://sundaram.fedorapeople.org/livecd-fedora-8-xfce.ks

This is meant for Fedora 8. You can either take a look at the list of packages or try creating a local image

# yum install livecd-tools
# livecd-creator –config

You might want to use a local mirror and –cache option to livecd-creator. Creating local customizations is trivial. Comments, fixes and suggestions, welcome. My plan is to create a initial image for Fedora 8 and then create incremental revisions with a solid release as part of Fedora 9.

  1. Way to go

Glad to see this happen, and glad that Fedora provided the tools to make it possible. I once considered a different distro, just because I couldn’t really run Fedora on the super-low-end hardware I had laying around.

Of course, getting rid of the old hardware made that less of an issue, but not everyone has tons of RAM and space and CPU power. That doesn’t mean Fedora should not be an option.

Way to go by starting the initiative.

  2. Re: Important

If you are complete novice, you basically shouldn’t bother about this post for now. Xfce information is available at http://xfce.org.
